This is one of my FAVOURITE exercises of all time and it often crops up in my programs. I adore it because it works: multiple muscle groups, primarily targeting the shoulders, chest, and upper back. Primary Muscles Worked: • Deltoids (Shoulders) – Particularly the anterior (front) and lateral (side) deltoids as you lift the dumbbells upward in an arch. • Pectoralis Major (Chest) – Engaged when bringing the dumbbells from the sides to overhead. • Trapezius (Upper Back) – Activated during the overhead portion and stabilization of the movement. Secondary Muscles Worked: • Rotator Cuff Muscles – Help stabilize the shoulder joint. • Serratus Anterior – Assists in the upward motion. • Triceps Brachii – Engaged during the overhead portion. • Core (Abs & Obliques) – Works to stabilize your torso throughout the movement. This exercise is great for shoulder mobility, stability, and overall upper body coordination. Tips: • Avoid swinging the dumbbells; focus on slow, controlled reps. • Core Engagement: Keep your abs tight to prevent excessive arching of the lower back. • If you feel discomfort, reduce the range of motion or use lighter weights. • Inhale as you lower the dumbbells, exhale as you lift. • Keep elbows soft and prevent shoulders from shrugging up to ears.
