Let’s be real, toddlers will loose their shit at anything and everything. It’s stressful and hard, especially when you’re tired (like me this week) HOWEVER every tantrum is a learning opportunity and a chance to bond with them. I always try the same few steps when my son starts loosing it: 1. Try getting him to focus on me. I do Theo by either asking him to look at me, listen to mummy or turn ears on. 2. Explain to him what is happening and why we are doing whatever we are doing. Get him to think about the end goal here. Your toddler may not be speaking yet, or may seem like they don’t have a clue what’s going on but THEY DO! They understand so much of what we say even if it doesn’t seem that way. It’s not wasted on them to signpost the day, explain why you’re getting dressed, where they’re going or what is next. It helps take the frustration away when they know good things are coming if they just do ‘x,y,z’ first. 3. If all else fails, just do what you gotta do. They can’t learn that screaming and crying ends with them getting their way, or they’ll keep acting this way for years and no one wants that life! It’s not cruel to get them dressed if they’re crying, nothing bad is happening to them and they’re safe. Sometimes they just can’t calm down and that’s normal. I love to have these little conversations with my son, he learns so much in these moments. Letting him help me with the same task can help him feel important and grown up, gives him confidence and helps us bond so much more. I help him with his shoes, he helps me with mine! What’s sweeter than that! I never want him thinking he can’t come to me for a cuddle, even when he’s at his worst I am always here to give him love. This isn’t a bad thing and it doesn’t mean I’m giving into the tantrum, we stick to the plan at all times but sometimes we have a cuddle break and then carry on.
