5 months ago, we didn’t think Wimpy would even make it. We were so close to losing him. I get so emotional when I look at his entire journey through pictures and videos. He has come so far. ♥️ Wimpy’s mother was rescued from a terrible hoarding/neglect case while pregnant. She gave birth prematurely due to stress and malnutrition. Wimpy, right from the start, was smaller than his siblings. He eventually ended up with a severe URI that turned into pneumonia. In a last ditch effort to save him, we got him on my personal nebulizer to open up his lungs so the antibiotic could penetrate deeper. It worked. He fought so hard to live. 😭 2 months ago, Wimpy got his first head and ear scritches. January has been a long year, no? Haha. 🥶😅 Here at Rancho Relaxo, we have been battling a week-long cold snap. Everything is frozen. This morning, one of our hydrants snapped under the ground and we had to put an emergency call into our well/plumbing company. We don’t have a secure estimate when it comes to cost yet — but could be anywhere from $750-$1,800. We are working 14 hour days to keep all of the rescued animals here at the sanctuary warm and safe. It is back-breaking work. It really is. There is so much going on in the world and I feel like, on top of the farm chores and constant work in the bitter temperatures, these outside stresses also weigh on us. The Gregory update you have all been waiting for! 😭♥️ I am so emotional over this. Gregory has finally been introduced to the mini herd. After living alone for so long, he finally has friends. He finally has a family. When Gregory was chained up, before his rescue, he would escape all of the time — in search of companionship. He would bray from morning until night according to the neighbors. The police would drag him back to his “owners” to be chained up again. He lived an extremely lonely life before coming to sanctuary. He also lived a neglected life — no fresh water or food and a halter embedded inches deep in his skin. To see his transformation, not just physically … but emotionally, has been a solid reminder as to why we continue pushing forward for animals in need. As most of you know, last September, we rescued a pregnant Meishan pig from a terrible hoarding/neglect situation. We named her Mamma Marla. She ended up giving birth to her piglets prematurely. Three survived. Wimpy was the smallest. His two brothers, Topsy and Tube Sock, were more than double his size. Wimpy also battled a severe URI which turned into pneumonia. In a last ditch effort to save him, we put him on a human nebulizer to open his airways, allowing the antibiotic to penetrate further. It worked. Wimpy fought so hard as we aided him through his scary health issues. Today, Wimpy is the same size as his brothers and he is strong. So very strong. He will stay at our sanctuary forever and grow up with his brothers under the watchful eye of his mom. As soon as the weather breaks, Wimpy will be moving back outside with them. Most of you understand what we do but I don’t talk specifically enough about our mission. Rancho Relaxo exists to give the slaughter-bound, neglected, abused, at risk, unwanted, “useless” animals a soft place to land and live out their lives. I do my best to educate the public through their harrowing, inspirational, devastating, uplifting stories. Levon had no where to go after his human passed away. He was at risk of being sent to auction due to his old age and inability to be ridden. This made him difficult to place because there was nothing he could give back to whoever decided to take him in. He probably would have ended up at a slaughterhouse — just as so many horses do on a daily basis. I love this little video clip so much. I stood still for a moment and simply watched him enjoying the final snowflakes fall from the sky after a full day of heavy snowfall. He had on his warm winter blanket and had fresh bedding under his hooves. He was content. He is content. This is all I ever expect of the animals under our care here at the sanctuary. It’s amazing how many online “vets” there are in the comment sections of social media posts, right? Two years ago, when we first announced that we were trying to save Ellie from slaughter, we received numerous negative comments telling us to euthanize her due to her legs issues. They also mentioned that we should put our funding toward horses who actually have a chance at a happy life and stop wasting time and energy on horses like Ellie. This is not the first time that we proved the keyboard warriors wrong, obviously. Today, Ellie is thriving after consistent physical therapy and a proper diet. Here is a short list of the things she would have missed out on if we didn’t give her a chance: a deep bond with her best friend (Kitchi), many bags of beet treats, sun bathing, playing in the snow and grazing on fresh spring grass. 🏔️ Hannah Montana: A Life That Almost Wasn’t 🐷 👠 Seven years ago, we saw a picture of a tiny, fragile calf—a calf that forty rescues had already said no to. She was born to be meat, but because she was disabled, a small window of hope opened for her to be saved. We couldn’t let that window close. We had to say yes. Dr. Davis and I boarded a single-engine plane, watching the weather anxiously. In the dead of winter, we found a 48-hour break from the storms and took off, flying across the country to Mile City, Montana. The flight was brutal. By the time we landed back home with our little girl, I had vertigo for three months. But I would do it all over again for her. We were just as scared as the others who said no. But we also knew that if we didn’t try to give Hannah a prosperous life, we’d be failing her just like the world had already failed her once. Cruz and Cooper arrived at Edgar's Mission after being found on the side of the road, they were only 24 hours old and were very weak, especially Cruz. Cruz showed no signs of being able to suckle from a bottle and required tube feeding but still showed no signs of improvement. He was then placed into our incubator with an oxygen machine and slowly with every little breath he came back to us. These two little lambs have been inseparable ever since. I love the quote "To be loved is to be changed" but I think in Chicco's case "to be seen" is more fitting. Back in August 2022 we were called to rescue a pig who had been abandoned and roaming for weeks by himself, we arrived to find him with tattered and torn ears, a slender frail build and uneasy pacing. All factors that any person would steer away and possibly be scared of him, but there was that glint in his eyes we knew he was harmless and just scared. We had seen him, not the rough ripped ears, but that inner need for compassion and connection, which is why it was no surprise he used that last little bit of faith to follow the trail of treats into the float and through the gates to sanctuary. Over the years he has received our unconditional acceptance and love (and a lot of treats and belly scratches) to become the biggest friendliest boy of his paddock. Sindy's Story - A Mother Cow's Unbreakable Bond Sindy's story is one of heartbreak, resilience, and the unbreakable bond between a mother and her child. Sindy was a mother cow at a dairy farm, but her babies were taken from her. Thankfully, the farm recognized the heartbreak this caused, closed down, and transitioned to a vegan lifestyle to align with their values of compassion for the cows they loved. When Sindy was surrendered to our sanctuary, her heart was broken. She longed for a baby she could nurture and love. Sindy eventually adopted two sheep, finding solace in caring for them. But it wasn't until we rescued Moses that Sindy's life was truly transformed. Moses was rescued after being torn from his mother at birth and chained to a pole, destined to be sold and slaughtered. When he arrived at the sanctuary, he was distraught, crying out for his mother. Sindy heard his cries and immediately took him under her protective and loving wing. The bond between Sindy and Moses was instant and unbreakable. To this day, Sindy and Moses are inseparable. Sindy has found the fulfillment and love in her heart that she so desperately needed. This story is a powerful testament to the depth of a mother cow's love and the cruelty of separating them from their young. So many farmers claim that mother cows don't care about their calves, but Sindy's story proves them wrong. Dani was attacked by stray dogs and lost her ears because of it. Sadly, her brother did not survive the terrible incident. She was then locked in a horse trailer that she could barely turn around in. Then, due to zoning laws, she was faced with slaughter. She has been through so much. My heart broke into a million pieces when her case was presented to me. I immediately agreed that we would take her in and bring her to Rancho Relaxo. She has had her ups and downs over the last couple of months but she is making progress! Because she was alone for such a long time, her biggest challenge right now is making friends with other pigs. We are so hopeful that she will overcome this obstacle. Currently, she shares a fenceline with Alba, Tobias and Gingersnap. She is VERY interested and hasn’t shown any aggression toward them. We are so proud of her.
