I've been noticing an issue for a while now and seeing a job posted today really pushed me to speak up about it. It's a bit of a deep topic, but I’ll try to break it down. We need to start prioritising first-year Australians over backpackers for decent entry-level jobs in the Agriculture industry. I'm talking about stock handling, truck driving, milking, fencing, broadacre farming, etc. Now, before anyone jumps in with the usual “I can’t find workers” or “no one wants to work anymore” arguments — I run one of Australia’s biggest Ag Job boards @Agriculture Jobs Auswide and I see people eager to get into Ag every single day, going above and beyond to get advice and ask for help because no one wants to give them a go. We've had over 120 applications for a single first-year position listed on the website and even roles we don’t advertise online our socials get 20+ applications. Stations, Dairy’s and Farms that have recently switched to hiring first-year workers have given us nothing but positive feedback. They have helped create a pathway for Aussies, keen to work in our Industry. We are currently facing an issue with filling middle and upper management roles. People can argue that Ag doesn’t pay enough or the hours are too tough, and yes, things are changing for the better but there’s one undeniable truth: there just isn’t enough people with the right knowledge in the industry. Now there are a lot of reasons people aren't stepping or staying in Ag — things like the absolutely disgusting gatekeeping behaviour I see online every day, a failing education system, lack of government support, unrealistic expectations about jobs, misinformation about pay, unfortunately a decline in harder workers and of course a lack of clear pathways into the industry. But if we want to see real change in the next 5-10 years, we need to start acting now. If you want to help and take on a First Year we have a category on the website which makes it easier for these people to find roles suitable for them, this section will remain free indefinitely to encourage more businesses to take on First Years. We all start somewhere and if we don’t teach them, who will?
