Back when dad had drivers, this one rolled his dump trailer. It was a 1965 Marion with a city box. They we're on a job hauling lime from Martin Marietta Woodville to Toledo scale in Toledo after the big fire. Got to spend the weekend with my sister. I can remember when four of us kids and Mom would pack into dad's k100 and go on some trip somewhere. I have no idea how we all fit but we did it are you doing something it didn't matter because we were all together. I remember several trips like that. Memories like this are never bought they're only created! Just a trip down memory lane for those of you who remember The Greater Chicago 76 in Bolingbrook Illinois. I Woodstock here or the Calumet 76 in South Holland Illinois when I was in the Chicago land area. Here we are in 2025, with technology everything is supposed to be greater.I have to disagree because I remember always having a place to park and getting a hot meal 24 hours a day at this 76. Free coffee and showers with 50 gallon of fuel was an everyday thing. You got S&h screen stamps which you could save up and get cool stuff from the little catalog. I wish we didn't lose our 76 stops but then again the world has changed so much that maybe it wouldn't even have mattered. I'll never forget the day the dad traded in that old White Freightliner cab over for this k100. I hated that freightliner! It gave me a headache whenever I slept in it and dad said well kid that's the road vibes. I remember my first time in this k100 and I could not believe the difference between the two trucks. I slept like a baby in that bunk and never woke up with a headache. Another old Unocal 76 stop along the way. This old historical spot is nestled right along the New York Thruway just east of Buffalo. It's was known as Pembroke 76 but the actual town is Corfu, NY. I always had trucks on the brain no matter what I was doing.. When I was in school I would draw trucks any chance I had. If you talk to me back then you would swear that I was much older than I really was. You grow up fast when you hang around the old man and his buddies riding in trucks and wrenching on the weekends. I could fully drive a tractor trailer by the time I was 15. Social media and the news like to spend stories which are emotionally triggered typically lead people down the wrong path. The real story is we've never had a truck shortage ever! The American trucking association which is backed by big carriers started that narrative back in the 80s. It's been a story that's been spun continuously since then. This was what we call a fuel stop today. In the 80's this was what we called a truck stop.. A place to get fuel and a place to eat. That's all you could really want for back in the day. Not every truck stop had showers so you went without one. When I was little I would go here with Dad and then when I got my license I started stopping here but it was towards the end of its life. I bought a lot of fuel here especially being so close to 94 and US 23. The fuel price was always cheaper than on the bigger roads so I always hopped off to get fuel here. It changed hands a few times but they always had decent fuel and somebody always seemed to keep the restaurant going for a while anyways. It's definitely not anything like it used to be.
