“Human rights are the oxygen of humanity.” At the opening of the Human Rights Council at the #UnitedNations in #Geneva on Monday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed the critical role of human rights in addressing global challenges, warning that they are being suffocated worldwide. “Human rights are on the ropes and being pummeled hard. This represents a direct threat to all of the hard-won mechanisms and systems established over the last 80 years to protect and advance human rights.” The Secretary-General affirmed that the recently adopted Pact for the Future offers a roadmap for winning the fight for #humanrights—through peace, development, the rule of law, climate action and better governance of technology.
