it’s often those great big spectacular moments or achievements that capture our attention, especially when it comes to people with disabilities. the more extraordinary, the better. but these entirely ordinary moments WERE spectular for the mere reason that they were not. you with me? no milestone was crushed. no breakthrough was chronicled. no feel-good moment was captured. and yet, this is the real. somehow it still manages to be so profound. because it reminds us, myself included, that not everything that involves a disabled person needs to be a spectacle. sometimes things are just ordinary. sometimes the best gift you can give someone is the opportunity to be themselves, even if that requires little to nothing from you. I had expectations in my head, even though I’d told myself not to. I was anticipating the spectacular. I kept waiting for my brother to really step in, like the uncle he is so much of the time. but maybe, he determined it wasn’t the time for more than simply being present. it was enough to just make room for and understand his nephew — what he’s needed from people before. an insight and empathy only he could show because of all he shares with his nephew by nature of being “different.” even in the seeming nothingness of every day life, there is learning still. there is extraordinary IN the ordinary and BECAUSE of the ordinary. that’s spectacular enough. #disabilitytiktok #downsyndrome #relatable #wholesome #uncle #nephew #empathy #empath
