MPs were fired up in the Parliament today as the Treaty Principles Bill saw its first reading. The bill passed its first reading, but not before Labour MP Willie Jackson was booted from the House for calling ACT Leader David Seymour a "liar" Speaker Gerry Brownlee offered Jackson the opportunity to apologise for his remark, but Jackson replied, saying it was "a message from the hīkoi". The message to Seymour, which he said in Parliament, was: "You fuel hatred and misinformation in this country. You bring out the worst in new Zealanders. you should be ashamed of yourself and you are a liar." Te Pāti Māori co-leader Rawiri Waititi also compared the ACT Party to the KKK during an energetic speech opposing the Treaty Principles Bill. He said the Parliament had no right to redefine the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and said that Treaty was superior, constitutional law. He concluded his speech, like Jackson, with a direct address to the minister in charge: "My message to you David Seymour is see you next Tuesday." A haka led by Te Pāti Māori later interrupted voting for the Treaty Principles Bill, with Opposition MPs and the public gallery standing to perform Ka Mate. #nzpol #nzstuff #nznews #nz

The wild Wellington weather has impacted sailings of the Interislander ferry on Friday, causing cancellations, damage to vehicles, and injury to a passenger. The 6.15am Picton to Wellington crossing of the Aratere and its 11am return were cancelled due to rough seas, with impacted passengers moved to other sailings. On one voyage that did get underway, the 8.45am Kaitaki sailing out of Wellington, some passenger vehicles shifted as a result of the vessel rolling and sustained minor damage, a Kiwirail spokesperson told Stuff. A witness on the ferry also said that there were both sofas and people sliding around the main lounge due to the roughness of the sea.

When asked if the haka in Parliament was a deliberate act of intimidation, as ACT leader David Seymour suggested, Te Pati Māori co-leader Debbie Ngawera-Packer said, "I don't think David's equipped to be talking about Ngāti Toa's haka, but haka is a challenge and is an absolute challenge to anyone that's attacking our mokopuna's rights to be who we are." Ngawera-Packer said multiple international media outlets, including the BBC, had contacted Te Pati Māori. They were shocked by the bill, she said. "I think it's unparliamentary to be debating te Tiriti, that's it. The minute he brought that attack into the House... you've got to expect a defence back. No Māori wants to be doing this right now, there's so much else we could be doing, but again David for whatever reason launched this attack," she said. #hikoi #nzpol #wellington #nzstuff #hikoimotetiriti 🔗 Read more at stuff.co.nz

Chris Toms lives in Warkworth and goes through the notorious Hill St intersection daily, sometimes twice daily, and is “still confused about who gives way to whom”. In September, Toms was pinged with a $150 ticket for failing to give way to the right after a near miss with a police car - and he caught the ordeal on his dashcam. Both cars were at give way signs. Toms began moving forward from Sandspit Rd towards Hill St when the traffic light ahead turned green, following the traffic in front of him, when the police car approached from Twin Coast Discovery Hwy on the right, nearly colliding with the side of Toms’ car. A road safety campaigner says the near miss has highlighted the intersection's "absurd" design but is critical of both drivers' actions. Can you tell who was in the right? #nearmiss #dashcam #auckland #nzpolice #nz #nzstuff

Racing Minister Winston Peters has announced the Government’s plans to end greyhound racing in New Zealand. “This is not a decision that is taken lightly but is ultimately driven by protecting the welfare of racing dogs,” the Minister said in an announcement at the Beehive on Tuesday afternoon. The three-time racing minister and supporter of the racing industry has been considering the future of greyhound racing since early this year. Many anti-greyhound racing activists believed his love of racing meant the industry would survive, so the announcement is likely to come as a shock both to the industry and opponents alike. #nznews #nz #greyhoundracing #nzstuff
