Crossley's business expertise blossomed in Palm Springs, including a housing subdivision, a water company, a tea and cosmetics business, a cafe, and a laundromat. Bright and ambitious, New Orleans trumpet player Lawrence Crossley saw opportunities in Palm Springs early on, relocating from The Big Easy in the 1920s with his wife and two daughters to take a position as chauffeur to Prescott Stevens, owner of the El Mirador Hotel. #history #africanamerican #blackhistory #culture #palmsprings #california

A conversation i had recently with a Blk supporter of our current president reminded me while things were written as separate but equal there were no apparatuses in place to ensure that. Lift Every Voice and Sing" is a hymn with lyrics by James Weldon Johnson (1871–1938) and set to music by his brother, J. Rosamond Johnson (1873–1954). Written from the context of African Americans in the late 19th century, the hymn is a prayer of thanksgiving to God as well as a prayer for faithfulness and freedom, with imagery that evokes the biblical Exodus from slavery to the freedom of the "promised land".James Weldon Johnson, Principal of the Edwin M. Stanton School in Jacksonville, Florida, had sought to write a poem in commemoration of Abraham Lincoln's birthday. However, amid the ongoing civil rights movement, Johnson decided to write a poem which was themed around the struggles of African Americans following the Reconstruction era (including the passage of Jim Crow laws in the South). "Lift Every Voice and Sing" was first recited by a group of 500 students in 1900. His brother J. Rosamond Johnson would later set the poem to music. #historytok #HistoryTime #blackhistorymonth #history #blackhistory #florida #jacksonville
Cecil Williams is perhaps the most well known photographer of the South Carolina civil rights movement. His photos have been featured in books, magazines, newspapers and even movies have captured many of seminal events which helped to shape this history.
