This is my OYSTER REVIEW series episode 2 This is chapel market kitchen, and every monday they serve £1 malden rock oysters There’s also a crazy dish on their menu I’ll tell you about at the end so stick around for that. In these oyster reviews, I'll answer your top oyster related questions, starting with “What do oysters taste like?” It depends on the type of oyster. Some Oysters have a briny, salty flavour, others are sweet and creamy, while others are more mineral or metallic. The oysters I’m eating here are malden rock oysters, so they are plump and meaty with a sweet aftertaste, the meat floats in a very cold, fresh oceanic water that is refreshing. Oysters come with various sauces, i like to pair mine with shallot vinegar mignonette, or lemon and tabasco because the sharp acidic notes cut through the briny, creamy taste of the oyster. It’s absolute heaven. This is the crazy dish, it’s anchovies on toast with vanilla butter, it’s a bold combination - the anchovies brings the rich, salty, fishy, umami flavour, the vanilla butter adds a creamy sweetness and the toast brings a crunchy texture - it works, but idk how its possible. its quite hard to understand If you have any questions about oysters you want answers, the bill came to 29, £14 for anchovies and £12 for the 12 oysters. #solodate #solotrip #oysters #oyster #London #londonlife #islington
This is the most bizarre museum in London no no actually in the UK. it contains conjoined piglets, Kylie minogie’s poo, Fiji mermaids, shrunken human heads and um, this. This is the Victor Wind museum of curiosities in hackney and I booked onto a guided tour with the museum’s emeritus director. I’ll tell you dates and prices at the end. . the tour started at 12, and we were given a welcome glass of absinthe - the venue is part bar, part museum - and then we descended into the wunderkabinett. a wunderkabinett is an encyclopaedic collection of objects without any categorical boundaries and is a predecessor of the modern museum. The collection is vast and contains the most unusual and bizarre items. But not everything in this museum is what it seems. Some of it is real - cyclops lamb skull, victorian hair art, naopleaons death mask some of it is not, like this Fiji mermaid is actually the head of a monkey sewn to the back half of a fish. and some items you just don’t know - like rolling stones’ used condoms, Pablo Escobar’s gold plated hippo skull and this?. Theres also a lot of erotica so its not suitable for kids I thought Victor Wynd was some eccentric dude from the 1700s but no, he’s a British artist and curator who’s alive, quite eccentric, and keeps adding to the collection, which already contains hundreds of thousands of oddities. So every time you visit, there may be a new item in the museum. You can visit the wunderkabinett without going on the tour, but I highly recommend the tour as the museums director take you through the history of selected items in the museum and tells you stories you wont be able to fins on the internet. The tour takes about an hour, it runs twice a month and costs £12 and you can book tickets on their website. Or you can book to visit the museum without the tool, also cost £12 to enter – unless you walk in on a Thursday and get tickets for £4. #solodate #hackney #londonlife #London #unusualplaces #viktorwynd #wunderkabinett #museumofcuriosities #darktourism #londonmuseum #alternativelondon #secretlondon
Hello friends its time for another solo date Today I am going to a 3 course cookery class at the Woodspeen cookery school in Newbury. It’s 1 hour on the train away from London. This is how it works, you arrive everyone has their own station and the chef leading the class cooks at the front of the room and then you copy what they do at your own station. I chose to do the Woodspeen classics course, where we cooked their most popular starter, main and pudding off the restaurant’s menu. This was chicken terrine with a shallot chutney and soda bread, lamb with asparagus, pesto potatoes and romanesco sauce and panna cotta with rhubarb compote and digestive biscuit. Everyone else there was a couple so I think it is more fun if you go with a partner, friends of family. There are also other courses that focuss on curries, beef wellingtons, afternoon tea and baking, meat butchery, French cuisine and more. It costs £165 for a 4/5 hours course They also offer corporate and team building classes too. (Invite) #solodate #cookerylesson #cooking #baking #thewoodspeen #newbury #berkshire
SUNDAY SOLO DATE SUPPER CLUB IN FINCHLEY !!!!! OTAKU is a supper club which takes place at Chef Max’s house in Finchley, It’s a 15 course menu which I have condensed into 3 minutes and I’ll tell you the price and next available dates at the end. We start with cocktails and then the first course is a chopped dashi broth with chives and matzoh balls. Max’s menu features predominantely Asian flavours because he believes they offer a more interesting flavour composition than European cuisine where flavour comes from mainly stock, salt and butter. The second course is a plump scallop is wrapped in a crispy batter and coated with a sweet thick katsu sauce, which - uh! Brilliant. Because Max didnt show us the menu beforehand, each course is a compete surprise to each of the 12 guests seated around his dining table. Third course is scallop cooked in beef fat with Sea buckthorn and with a fried bun. Max has worked at Michelin starred restaurants for the last 5 years and started this supoer club as he was disappointed with how many restaurants create beautiful looking dishes that taste of nothing and come with such a hefty price tag that you leave the restaurant feeling like you’ve been robbed, and wanted to create the opposite: a relaxed environment with delicious food where you feel like you’ve got your moneys worth. Course number 4: a buttery, sweet Langustine corn dog, complemented by a tangy langoustine head ketchup - genius. The menu is split into a fish and meat section - this is the final langoustine course was like a pad Thai boil with soft silky raw langoustines, pickled coriander and sweet candied peanut. It tasted as good as it sounds. Also every time I frown, it means the food is incomprehensibly delicious. Course 6 is another fish dish, this is hamachi saashimi with an acidic Tomato consume - seasoned with warming wild garlic vinegar and oil. max told us to drink the sauce, this isnt me exhibiting chocking table manners! Course 7 is Belly of hamatchi, white soy, nori and sesame served on a crumpet. Prior to every course max comes and gives some background info about how he created the dish and I have to say each course delivers a combination of ingredients I have never seen before. Course 8 - Smoked eel veloutee with mashed potato and chives - the eel tastes like bacon this had some unbelievable umami flavours Course 9 now we’re onto the meat section of the menu this was beef tartar with shredded mint and a sweet, spicy and sour dressing. Course 10 - Thai green curry braised short rib and fillet of beef, pickled jalapeños, braised aubergines, Thai green ketchup - it’s sweet, tangy, rich, fatty. beautiful. The 11th course was the most surprising of all - Dairy milk mousse with salt and vinegar syrup and potato twill. It’s like tangy salted chocolate which doesnt sound like it would work but my god this was unbelievable. 12th course was rhubarb that was grown in Yorkshire by tea light with custard, served iqwth a warm rhubarb gel and chunky rhubarb bits. Course 13 was a twist on a Banoffee pie. Course 14 was the first non watery and therefore delicious tirimasu I’ve ever had in my life And course 15, we finished with some petit fours - my favourite was was the white chocolate and miso fudge. Next dates are 7th and 8th of march 2025, it’s 20 seats per night and costs £130 a head. Link to tickets are in Max’s bio! @chefmaxposener on insta (INVITE) ##solodate##supperclub##finchley##London##londonfood##londonfoodie##londonfood##londonsupperclub##Foodie##FoodTok
I’m German, and today I’m heading to the capital of the VATERLAND—Berlin—for a week-long solo trip. My flight’s at 10am from Stansted because, now that I’m in my thirties, I no longer book flights that require a 3am wake-up. I don’t hate myself that much. I got the stansted express from Liverpool Street and guys I did vow never to fly Ryanair again, but when faced with a £60 flight versus £320 on BA, the choice was made for me. That said, screw Ryanair—this exact flight was £34 the day before, and when I booked, it had doubled. That’s almost as rude as paying £4.05 for a flat white. Yes, there’s an airport premium, but at what point are we making a stand? Soon, we’ll be paying £6 or £7 unless we start protesting. Anyway, Berlin is so much cheaper than London, which is a huge part of the appeal and the plan is to revisit my favourite restaurants, check out some galleries and museums, and, of course, go clubbing. Berlin nightlife is unparalleled. But if you’re planning a visit, don’t come in January like me, come between May and October—the rest of the year, the city turns into a grey, depressive hole. also LOL at the airport which looks like a hardcore techno club. Once you arrive at the airport, it’s a 40 min train into the city centre. A week’s travel pass costs €44.50, and you need to buy and stamp your ticket before boarding, If you don’t, it’s a €60 fine—no exceptions even for tourists. The ticket inspectors show no mercy—I saw three people get fined within seconds of leaving the station by plainclothes inspectors.
Solo dates ep 22: secret / lost / disused parts of the London Underground. I went to Baker Street to learn about all the history of the station hidden in plain sight as well as a rundown of the history of TfL in its early days. here's how it works we met our guides at the Sherlock Holmes statue, and headed into the secret and disused parts of the station some of which are hidden in plain sight for example just off the modern westbound platform you'll find abandoned rooms that once served as passenger waiting rooms complete with a fireplace and even a men’s loo we also explored a disused lift shaft made of wood which was closed when the station became too busy and then was replaced with escalators and now serves as a ventilation shaft this tour explores the history of Baker Street and the early days of public transport in London. The tube was the world's first underground railway and initially ran steam powered tubes with first class carriages where tickets cost 6 pence and regular tube passengers were nicknamed sewer rats! there also used to be a London Transport Rifle club within Baker Street and you can see the disused rifle range here and London Transport used to grow food for the employees in their own farms this tour was so much fun it was basically a 90 minute history lesson tickets cost £45 you can do tours of other stations too and you can book it through London Transport Museum #hiddenlondon #secretlondon #bakerstreet #abandonedplaces #hiddeninplainsight #London #londonlife
KIPFERL - AUSTRIAN RESTAURANT REVIEW + Valentinstag inspo ?? I am German and I am reviewing all the German - and Austrian - restaurants in London and today I will visit the ONLY authentic Austrian restaurant and patisserie in the capital. (Invite) This is Kipferl and it’s tucked away in Camden passage in Islington. I am here with Meiner deutschen Mutter so lets kick off with der Klassiker - Kaspressknödelsuppe, which is a thick, cheesy dumpling swimming in a delicate beef broth which is often served in the alpine region of austria. we also had the Kartoffelrösti mit Lachs und Krauter dip - smoked salmon and potato rosti, warm crispy rosti and cool crisp herb dip cut through the fatty salmon. an Almdudler which is a herbal lemonade with greater brand recognition in austria than Coca Cola, mad! quick history lesson before hauptspeisen - “Kipferl” is the German word for a crescent shaped pastry, which dates back to 13th century austria and is considered to be the forefather of the humble croissant, and Kipferl feels like an Alpine homage to Austria, with posters everywhere a small deli stocked with Austrian food products and wood-panelled walls adorned with, skis, Austrian wines and deer skulls. Fur die Hauptspeise we had kasekrainer which is a lightly smokes sausage with cubes of Emmental cheese inside it’s quite salty and hearty so it pairs beautifully with the sweet and slightly bitter flavour of the tarragon mustard which is an Austrian classic. As well as the acidity of the sauerkraut. Sauerkraut if you havent had it, is fermented cabbage - kimchi Austrian style, if you will, just without the garlic and chili heat. Because it is well known that German and Austrian cuisine contains no spices, paprika is spicy enough for us. Dazu kam natuurlich RindGoulash mit Spetzle, spetzle are soft egg noodles—almost like tiny dumplings— which are fried and often accompany hearty dishes across Austria and southern Germany. There is a lot of crossover between food in southern germany and austria becuase of their centuries of shared history. We also had a schnitzel… now… people often accuse schnitzels of tasting quite bland, but I think it works well as a canvas for punchy sauces or salads, like cranberry sauce or a salty and vinegary potato salad. There is also a great selection of Austrian wines too. It must be clear to you by now how heavy and filling Austrian food is. Luckily my stomach’s pudding compartment was still empty so for Nachtisch we had Kaiserschmarm for the first time ever! This is a fluffy shredded pancake dusted with powdered sugar and served with fruit compote, and the Mozartkuchen, a chocolate and pistachio cake inspired by the traditional Mozartkugel. This restaurant is also a patisserie so you can buy cakes and cupcakes to takeaway and you know that valentines day is just around the corner… so… I’ll leave that there. #österreich #kipferl #österreichischeküche #goulash #londonlife #islington #deutscheküche #schnitzel #London #austrianfood #austriancuisine #ValentinesDay #romance
I am German and on Sunday 23rd February I watched the German election results unfold at a German Embassy event in London. It was hosted at the German ambassadors residence on Belgrave square and There were all sorts of German snacks available, bratwurst in laugenstangen mit senf und ketchup, Eine arabisch inspirierte Kartoffelsuppe mit kichererbsen, Brezeln, haribo und leckerer zwetschken Kuchen and natürlich, German beer and deutscher wine. there were lots of media people at this event. I brought my German mother as a plus one who immediately spotted Alistair Campbell, said she recognised him and was he perhaps an old university friend of hers? He wasnt, but I went over and said hallöchen I love your podcast, and we ended up discussing election predictions in German—his German is really rather impressive. Just before 5pm we all crowded into a room to watch the results of the exit polls, if you don’t know much about German politics, support for the far right party AfD has recently soared so there’s a fear about what that means for Germany. In the end, The CDU which is the equivalent of the Tory party got 28% and the AfD got 20% and there were less than 4 million votes between the two. and with no outright majority, its up to the CDU to form a coalition government, but will they break the firewall and create one with the AfD who are now the second largest party in the country? Or will they work with 2 or 3 smaller parties to form a government? What do you think….?
