I am German and it is my duty to review all things German in London. today I am checking out Zeit für Brot, a new German bakery that has opened in Islington, just by Angel station. Das ist natürlich sehr aufregend, because this is the first new German bakery in London since Kamps on Tottenham Court Road closed, does anyone remember this? Here you can buy German bread, sandwiches, so many pastries and cakes and coffees, I like that there are some German product names, like Schnecke, schockostange, kasedings, kardamom Knopf… . It’s quite a roomy cafe with three spaces to sit and in the room at the back you can watch the bakers at work, it was quite cool to see the slinging that goes into making a bezel. I chose 3 things to eat - the apple cinnamon Schnecke which was warm, pillowy and pretty much faultless, and then i also had a kasedings which translates to cheese thing and the freshly baked bezel that had been made in front of my eyes, cant really beat it, the kasedings is a stick of bread covered in cheese, seeds and herbs, I thought it would be like the Gails cheese straw but it’s not, its quite tough to eat but I liked it I am delighted a new German bakery has opened in London, I only wish they had REALLY German cakes like a streusseltaler, puddingbrezel, nussecke, bienenstichtorte or a mandarin schmand Kuchen…. One day perhaps?? #germany #german #germanbakery #zeitfürbrot #deutschebäckerei #bäckerei #germancafe #London #londoncafe #londonlife #londonfood #germancuisine #germanfood #deutscheküche
I’ve come to the Yorkshire dales to eat oysters at the Wensleydale Heifer which is a luxury boutique hotel and restaurant which was visited by Princess Anne and which has a nautical theme, despite being 50 miles from the nearest ocean. I wanted to introduce my friend to oysters so we got a selection of rock and native, which came from Scotland, Ireland and northumberland but sadly she didnt love them. Oysters were once the fast food of the working class in London. In the 18th and 19th centuries, they were so abundant that they were sold on street corners, in cheap oyster cellars, and even added to pies and stews as a filler ingredient. In London, oyster stalls were a staple of working-class life. Charles Dickens even wrote about London's oyster sellers in The Pickwick Papers, describing how they sold them for a penny a handful. But overharvesting, pollution, and urban expansion decimated oyster beds. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, wild oysters became scarcer, prices rose, and they transformed from everyday food into a delicacy. Today, sustainable farming has made oysters more widely available again, but they still carry the reputation of being a luxury item… far removed from their working-class roots. #oysters #oysterhistory #oystergirl #yorkshire #FoodTok
Did you know that the @Barbican Centre was designed to be a place where you could take pleasure in getting lost. tell me, whats the longest time it’s taken you to find the entrance? How angry and flustered were you by the time you arrived? would you call it, a pleasurable experience? This is solo dates episode 26 and today I’m going on a tour of the barbican to learn about its fascinating history and confusing brutalist architecture. The Barbican is Europe’s largest arts venue and is home to 2,000 flats, each with an average price of £1 million. It also has a pub, remnants of the London Wall, built by the Romans in around 200 ADgravestones from medieval jewish burial ground the site lies on, a girls school (look for the large pencil-like detailing on the buildings exterior), sarcophaguses and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where Keir Starmer learned to play the flute. Look out for the tuning-fork sculptures outside. The Barbican was built on the ruins left in the wake of the Second World War. This is what the area looked like before the Blitz, it was a bustling neighbourhood of tailors, dressmakers, and fabric merchants. However, the flammable materials in these shops caused fires from the bombing raids to spread quickly, which meant the neighbourhood was destroyed… The only building left standing was this rather unattractive office block, so the Barbican had to be built around it. All the rough concrete facades in the barbican were chiseled and drilled BY HAND, it took 17 years to finish and there’s only one patch left untouched behind a column, where the workers couldn’t reach. Probably a bit gutting for them when, in 2003, the Barbican was voted London’s ugliest building, so they tried to cover up some of the concrete with these golden faces. But the Barbican has become cooler in recent years, harry Styles filmed his music video for As It Was here, and it was used to represent the MI6 headquarters in the James Bond film Quantum of Solace And now 6 fun barbican facts: 1 they put chemicals in the water to give it this nice blue colour, otherwise it would be brown. 2 Barbican residents are only allowed to hang pale curtains in their apartments to make sure the exterior looks uniform. 3 There are many nautical influences in the buildings’ design – see the similarity to a cruise ships, here and the balconies which mimic Venetian gondolas. 4 The Barbican is home to one of the few remaining medieval churches in the City of London, it has the unusual name "St Giles' without Cripplegate" and its thought that there has been a church on this spot for one thousand years. 5 The Barbican is one of the few places in London with elevated walkways. This was part of a post-war vision to lift pedestrians above traffic, but the plan was abandoned in the 1980s. 6 The Barbican Conservatory houses 2,000 species of tropical plants, admission is free but it is only open on dates listed on their website This was a great tour, it cost £18 for adults, £5 if you’re under 25, it lasts between 90 minutes and two hours and they run pretty much every day between 11am and 4pm. So back to the question of how do you find the entrance to the barbican? apparently it was designed to be easy to find – if, that is, you know the correct way to get there. When you leave barbican tube station, do not exit onto the street level, instead head up the stairs to the footbridge. Head straight over until you reach stars which take you down to the fountains, which is where the main entrance is. Youre welcome. #barbican #London #londonlife #solodates #solotrip #barbicancentre #londonart #londonhistory #history #brutalism #brutalistarchitecture #architecture #londonarchitecture
More oyster pairings, this time with Sriracha. 1) satay inspired oyster - 1000/10, feat the return of the fan favourite hammer 2) classic sriracha mignonette - 8/10, nothing that blows the socks off in terms of originality and uniqueness but also very pleasant 3) Bloody Mary inspired oyster - tres Bon. 9/10, wish I had had horseradish to go with it perhaps? London has some bloody mad ice cream flavours right now, so let’s go check out two ice cream parlours doing it properly. First up: Anya Hindmarch’s Ice Cream Project in Pont Street, back for its fourth year. This time, they’ve gone all out with flavours like pickled onion and Bisto gravy, though there are a few more palatable ones too, like Hobnobs and Maldon sea salt. I picked nine flavours: olive oil, sriracha, Bisto gravy, Quaker oats, Twiglets, Hobnobs, Maldon sea salt, pickled onion, and custard. Total price: £25. The pop-up’s open until 16th August, and the queues weren’t mad when I went on a Saturday morning. Open from 10am-6pm daily Next: Venchi. (invite) They've got a few branches across London; I went to the one on King’s Road. They’ve launched three new flavours: olive oil, Parmesan, and caramel + rosemary. The cone gets coated in a milk chocolate spread infused with olive oil, and I went for two scoops - one of olive oil and one of parmesan. The olive oil wasn’t as good as the one from the Ice Cream Project, but the parmesan ice cream was the best thing I ate all day. It's cheesy and creamy, but delicate so not too scary for people who are nervous about unusual savoury flavours. Let me know if there are other ice cream spots doing weird flavours bc I’m obsessed with weird and wonderful flavours!! #icecream #London #londonlife #londonfood #venchi
