I have come across many horses that can do their groundwork inside, but as soon as they don’t have walls or fences to rely on, their holes show. So when I can, I like to do their ground work in the wide open. I want them to be able to move their feet and travel. I want there to be distractions. I want them to have to think about the situations they put themselves in. I want uneven ground and obstacles. I want the horse pen to tempt them to be drawn that way. And I want to see where the holes are so I can fix them. I believe it improves focus, communication, and is a small thing that makes a more solid foundation before stepping on.
