A couple of weeks ago, our #FridayFeeling was Chet Atkins playing The Entertainer. It got such a great response that this week, we're playing Classical Gas. The tune was envisioned to be "fuel" for the classical guitar repertoire and originally performed by American guitarist Mason Williams in 1968. Here, Chet plays for the show Nashville Now in the late 80's. Have a great weekend, everyone! #guitar #chetatkins #classical #NewMusic #fyp
#AskRandy Mike Jackson asks: How did you come up with the name The Guess Who? Did someone call you one day on the phone and say guess who? Hi Mike, Nope. It was a trial and error process of naming our first band. Here’s the full story. Cheers! #GuessWho #Rocknroll #storytime
I've shared fond memories of Gordon Lightfoot before but was recently asked by someone in media so am sharing again for new followers here. Gordon was a good friend and a great inspiration. I saw him many times myself but the real impact was when Burton Cummings and I first went to his show in 1966. He played nearly 2 hrs of original songs and kept us spellbound with the stories, lyrics and poetry woven into his music. It really made us think, "Maybe we can do that too as musicians." We wrote a song called Lightfoot about it. He went beyond acoustic and his drummer was Barry Keane, whose dad George Keane, the head of Quality Records, signed The Guess who and gave us our name. Barry played congas on the BTO hits "Looking out for Number 1" and "Blue Collar". Here he is with a bit of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" #History #Music #Canadian #GordonLightfoot #legend #hero #inspiration #MusicMonday
The quickest composition of all my songs? American Woman. A group effort that was totally impromptu. #AskRandy #songwriter #guitarist #musician #guesswho
#FridayFeeling: Heading into the #weekend with Roy Clark's #Guitar Boogie. Did you know Clark also played banjo and fiddle and was the first country artist to play the Montreux Jazz Festival? Have a good one everybody!
"No Time" was another landmark song for The Guess Who, our third million seller in North American which also charted abroad. Burton Cummings and I were looking for a rock song to follow "These Eyes". Impressed by the country-rock style of bands like Buffalo Springfield, I created a riff inspired by their song "Hung Upside Down" and took it to him. We wrote the song together during one of our regular Saturday morning songwriting sessions at his mother's house. The distortion sound from my '59 Gibson Les Paul, a Herzog amp and a whammy bar, combined with Burton's incredible voice took it to #1. I have often said that when we wrote music together, we created something much bigger than the sum of our parts, and that was the case again with this song. #rocknroll #Canada #TheGuessWho #NoTime #Throwback #ClassicRock @Burton Cummings
#AskRandy: Kelly Deveau asks: Do you get goosebumps hearing a particular song you’ve written on the radio? Hi Kelly, A few days ago I was clicking around while driving and TCB was on the Classic Rock station and yes, I still feel the thrill that people are rocking out in their cars all these years later. The glow really never wears off that my dream of being a musician came true. It's really incredible. Video: 1975 #fyp #music #radio #tcb #bto
