Happy Mardi Gras yall! Near where I’m from we do Mardi Gras a lil different than New Orleans. We run around collecting ingredients for gumbo, visiting neighbors houses, chasing chickens, and generally acting a fool. #mardigras #cajunmardigras

Replying to @ProtozoanJesus 🇨🇦 New Orleans has a curbside recycling program but they don’t accept glass! They do have a drop off option for glass and other recyclables and the glass comes to us. Sadly this is very common across the US but especially in the southeast like Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and parts of Florida! There’s sooo much glass just going to landfills

Low water means really being able to see what our project accomplished!! I’m so proud of how it’s looking and how nature took over. This project was completed with USFS, common ground relief, and CRCL. #coastalrestoration #louisiana

I know Mardi Gras ended a few weeks ago but the results from this years efforts are in! We diverted 73,858 total lbs from our landfills. That was about 100,000 aluminum cans, 900 lbs of plastic, 46,321 lbs of glass, and 22,803 lbs of beads and throws!!! I’m so proud of the recycle dat team this year and I can’t wait to continue growing our coalition and our impact!! Mardi Gras can still be fun while being more sustainable

Here we are and this is how it is!!! It still feels surreal to say we’ve built islands and I can’t wait to build some more. But here’s a little backstory on how we got here - with the narration style (which I believe was originated by @TIERA 🍒 !)

It feels so surreal to say that we just opened our brand new glass recycling facility 😭 we came from a backyard in 2020 to a 3 acre facility. Thank you endlessly to everyone who has supported us throughout this process. What a journey it’s been

Replying to @Kylee Roy more marsh treasure hunting!! Rip Shelly. Gone but never forgotten. We let fish and wildlife know so they could maybe go see how/why she died. And we got lots more traditional treasures!! What a day.

I know recycling glass into sand can’t single handedly save Louisianas coast. I’m trying to be one part of the solution and show others that there’s hope!! #coastalrestoration #louisiana #climateaction

15 years ago the BP Oil spill devastated the gulf, changing Louisiana’s coast forever. The one silver lining is that the money from the settlement (largest environmental settlement in history!) is now funding crucial restoration projects like the Mid Barataria sediment diversion. Follow @Restore MRD to learn more about the project and click the link in their bio to show your support for this project that could build thousands of acres of wetlands 🐊🌱

It really does feel like it all happened in a moment!!! 5 years ago we were crushing glass in the backyard of a fraternity house while trying to juggle school and a global pandemic. Now we have a 3 acre facility that can process half a million beer bottles in a day. AND WE BUILT ISLANDS!!!

I feel lucky to say that we’re not reliant on federal or state funding to do what we do! Our NSF funds have already been deployed thankfully. And being self reliant was a very conscious choice. We decided to form as a business so that we could sustain ourselves via our own revenue and not be reliant on grants and donations. I never in a million years thought trump/doge would take things to such extremes and defund so many important programs but I’m glad to say I’m not going away due to all the recent cuts. Other CRUCIAL programs like NSF, NOAA, and americorps are being defunded which is BS. Service and science are so important to fighting climate change

Replying to @Spoonio this is continued research funded by the national science foundation. Basically many marsh species can live/grow in deeper water but the seedlings, especially cypress, need some sediment / shallower water. So to truly bring back cypress to this area we want to see if we can utilize our sediment to build up the land in the area so the marsh can truly thrive!!
